* Your conscious mind is a linear processor. When you are stuck, it usually remains stuck head-on and getting a different perspective is very difficult then. When you take small breaks, you kind of delegate that task to your subconscious parallel processor, which is very effective.
* If during your short break, you prefer to walk or change your physiological state(i.e. if you are coding, then go play racquet ball) the increased blood circulation also helps in getting a recharge.
